ASUS Firmware Restore
From Entuura
The only very foolproof way to put the firmware on the first time is with the ASUS Firmware Restore utility. It is here.
This is fiddly, pay attention to the steps, exactly.
Here are the steps:
- set your laptop to 192.168.1.2, netmask 255.255.255.0, no default router
- plug in to LAN port 1. NO OTHER PORT WILL WORK!
- launch the Firmware Restore tool
- browse for your image that you got from the Entuura website
- click restore
- wait for the bar to go across two times
- no really, wait
- I'm serious. You have to wait because after the first bar goes across (the file transfer, fast), the second bar goes across (firmware write, slow)
When it reboots the configuration is the Default Configuration.
A handy tool to change your IP address quickly is WinIPs.
Alternative Method
Steven has tested firmware installation on a pre-flashed Asus box using the standard TFTP.exe that comes on XP and Vista. This method seems to work fine. Use this command line tool instead of the Asus Firmware Restore utility
- To make work, ensure that you configure tftp.exe for binary transfer
- The other instructions above are equally applicable here
- The Asus utility makes you wait quite a while before acknowledging complete. In the case of tftp.exe, once you upload the firmware to the device, you will need to wait about 1 minute before rebooting the unit. As above you have to wait because being done with the upload is only the 1st step. The firmware is only written after the transfer is completed.
